As a rather interesting piece points out<\/a>, what Apple is likely after with the reported McLaren tie-up is actually the technology and engineering arm rather than the more high profile car manufacturing and racing side. This is because, unbeknownst to me and most likely almost all other commentators on the matter, McLaren Applied Technologies has “designed better health monitoring systems; created a scheduling system for Heathrow Airport that reduces flight delays; cut the time oil and gas drillers spend on exploration based on better data; sped up drug trials run by pharmaceutical companies and reduced the time their production plants are idle.” All of which would allow Apple to move strongly into the enterprise technology space currently dominated by SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, and others.
